Frequently Asked Questions – Custodian and Broker Information

If I sign up, who would be managing my money? Would I still have control over my account?

We recognize that handing over the keys to your hard-earned money can feel like a bit of a financial trust fall exercise. Rest assured, we have a team of fiduciaries that work together to make your investing experience a positive one. Here’s a who’s who of how your money will be invested and what features you’ll have access to once you become a MFWM client:

Portfolio Managers - Each Personal Portfolio Strategy has a primary Portfolio Manager responsible for the holdings of that strategy. They are performing the analysis, keeping up with news and trends, and monitoring exactly what positions (and how much of each!) should be in each strategy.

Traders - Our in-house trading team executes trade orders in your account, whether they are updating your holdings based on Portfolio Manager actions or freeing up cash for a pending withdrawal. Given the attention to detail required to their jobs, clients are not permitted to speak directly with our trading team.

Wealth Advisors - Your Wealth Advisor is your main interface with MFWM. They assist in building an asset allocation tailored for you, which they believe matches your capacity and appetite for risk with the downside mitigation to help you stay the course. As one notable study from Vanguard shows, up to 67% of the value of having an advisor is not necessarily in stock selection but in helping you manage your investor behavior!

Custodians - which means that they are responsible for the safekeeping of your assets — MFWM only directs the trading activity within your account and doesn't hold your assets directly.

Once your account is under our management, MFWM, in discretionary capacity, would be managing your money for you. That means MFWM would make all the trades — you cannot transact in the account, nor can you tell us what securities to buy and sell. You will still be able to add funds, withdraw funds, restrict a few specific stocks, and disconnect your account from MFWM’s authority.

Put simply, MFWM would have sole investment discretion over the course of our advisory relationship. So please note that we do not take investment instructions from our clients (although you do retain the ability to place or remove trading restrictions on specific securities in your account).
